Counting emoji is harder than it looks. A flag is two letters, a family is four people joined by invisible characters, and a thumbs up with a skin tone is two pieces. Count the underlying data and you get two, seven and two. Count what a reader sees, which is what this tool does, and you get one each.

What the Emoji Counter does
A family is one emoji
A family emoji is four people joined by invisible characters, and a flag is two letters. Counted naively they come to seven and two. Counted the way a reader sees them, which is what this tool does, they are one each.
Skin tones and combinations marked
The tool separates plain emoji from those carrying a skin tone modifier and those built by joining several together, because those are exactly the ones other counters miscount.
Every emoji listed
Not just a total: each emoji you used is listed with how many times it appears, most frequent first, so you can see at a glance which one you lean on.
Nothing is uploaded
Counting runs in your browser using local JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, never stored and never passed to any third party. Disconnect from the internet and it still works.
Emoji Counter questions
How do I count the emoji in my text?
Paste the text into the box above. The emoji count appears immediately and updates as you type, along with a list of every emoji used and how often each one appears.
Why do other tools give a different emoji count?
Because most of them count code units rather than emoji. A flag is two regional indicator letters, a family emoji is four people joined by invisible characters, and a thumbs up with a skin tone is two code points. Counted naively those come to two, seven and two. This tool counts what a reader sees, so each is one.
Does an emoji count as one character elsewhere?
Often not. X counts emoji as two characters against the 280 limit, and a single emoji in an SMS pushes the whole message from the 160 character GSM alphabet into Unicode, which cuts the limit to 70. If you are writing to a limit, check against that platform rather than against a plain emoji count.
How many emoji should a social post have?
There is no rule, but one to three is the usual advice for a post meant to be read rather than skimmed. Screen readers announce the full name of every emoji, so a line of ten is read aloud as ten descriptions, which is worth knowing before you add the eleventh.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser by local JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, never written to a database and never passed to any third party or AI service. Disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
