Every answer to "how many pages is a thousand words" rests on assumptions somebody forgot to mention: which font, what size, how far apart the lines, how wide the margins. Change any one of them and the answer moves by pages. This calculator puts all of them in front of you instead, and shows the words-per-page figure it used, so you can check the working rather than take it on trust.

Words to pages at a glance

12pt Times New Roman, 1 inch margins, US Letter — the setup behind almost every published answer to this question. Change the controls above to match your own document.

What this calculator does

Both directions

Start from a word count and get pages, or start from a page count and get the words you need to write. A five page paper is a word target, not a page target, and this gives you the number to aim at.

Your formatting, not a guess

Font, point size, line spacing, margins and paper size all change the answer, and all of them are yours to set. Change one and the figure moves immediately, so you can see what a wider margin actually costs you.

Paste the text itself

If the writing already exists, paste it and the word count comes from the same engine as the word counter on this site. No retyping a number from somewhere else, and no chance of the two tools disagreeing.

Shows its working

The words per page figure behind every answer is shown, not hidden. If a tutor asks why you think 1,500 words is six pages, you can tell them exactly what the assumption was.

An estimate, honestly labelled

Headings, lists, tables, block quotes and where paragraphs happen to break all move the real page count. No word-based calculator can know about them, and one that claims an exact answer is guessing with more confidence than it has earned.

Nothing is uploaded

Counting runs in your browser using local JavaScript. Text you paste is never sent to our server, never stored and never passed to any third party. Disconnect from the internet and it still works.

Words and pages, answered

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About two pages single spaced, or four pages double spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with 1 inch margins. In 11pt Arial it is closer to 1.7 pages single spaced, because Arial is a wider typeface and fits fewer words on a line.

How many pages is 500 words?

About one page single spaced and two pages double spaced in the standard 12pt Times New Roman setup. This is the most searched version of the question because 500 words is the commonest short essay length.

How many words is a page?

Around 550 words single spaced and 275 double spaced at 12pt Times New Roman with 1 inch margins on US Letter. The figure your tutor has in mind is almost always the double spaced one, since that is what most style guides require.

Why does the font change the answer so much?

Because typefaces are not the same width at the same point size. Times New Roman is narrow and fits about 550 words to a single spaced page; Arial at 11pt fits about 580 and Courier New at 12pt only about 425. Switching font can change a long document by several pages without a word being added.

Why does going from 11pt to 12pt cost more than it looks like it should?

Because point size works on the area of the page, not just the height of a line. A larger size makes each line taller and each word wider at the same time, so the words that fit fall roughly with the square of the change. That is why one point can add a page or more across a long document.

Is this exact?

No, and nothing that works from a word count can be. Headings, lists, tables, images, block quotes and where paragraphs break all change the real page count, and none of them are visible in a word total. Treat the answer as a close estimate for ordinary prose and check the document itself if an exact page count matters.

Does it handle A4 as well as US Letter?

Yes. A4 is narrower and taller than US Letter and ends up holding about 6% more text with the same margins, so a long document runs slightly shorter on A4. US Legal and A5 are also offered.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. If you paste text to have it counted, the counting happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server, stored, or passed to any third party or AI service, and the tool keeps working with the network disconnected.
