Count characters as you type, or check your text against any of 38 built-in platform limits. Pick a platform and anything over the limit is highlighted right in the editor, where you can trim it. Nothing is uploaded.

Counted on your own device. Your draft is never sent to us.
A character count on its own is rarely the question. The real question is whether the text fits: in a post, in a bio, in a subject line, in an ad. So this counter carries the limits with it. Choose the platform you are writing for and the counter becomes a countdown, with anything over the limit shaded in the editor where you can delete it.
Two numbers matter on most platforms, not one. Instagram accepts a caption of 2,200 characters but shows about 125 of them before collapsing the rest behind a link, and LinkedIn cuts a post at roughly 140. Being rejected and being ignored are different failures, so both thresholds are marked wherever a platform has them.
What this character counter does
Counts as you type
Characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs and lines, updated on every keystroke. Use it with no limit set and it is simply a fast, accurate character counter.
Highlights the overflow
Pick a platform and everything past its limit is shaded inside the editor, where you can edit it directly. You see exactly which words have to go, rather than a number telling you that some of them do.
Knows that limits come in pairs
A platform that accepts 2,200 characters may only show 125 of them. Where that is true the tool marks both points, because being rejected and being cut off in the feed are different problems.
Counts the way the platform does
Emoji and accented letters are counted as single characters, matching what X and most platforms report, rather than as the two or more code units a naive length check returns.
Warns before you hit the wall
The meter changes as you approach the limit, so a near miss is visible before it becomes an overflow.
Nothing is uploaded
Every count happens in your browser. Your draft is never sent to our server, never stored and never passed to any third party, which matters when the draft is an unpublished campaign.
Character limits by platform
Every limit built into the tool above. Checked against published platform guidance in October 2026. Where a platform shows less than it accepts, both numbers are given.

Character counter questions
How do I count characters in my text?
Paste or type into the box above. The character count appears immediately and updates as you type, with and without spaces. No limit needs to be chosen, and nothing is uploaded.
How do I check my text against a platform limit?
Choose a platform from the list above the box. The counter switches to a countdown of characters remaining, and anything past the limit is shaded inside the editor so you can see and delete exactly the part that will not fit.
What is the character limit for an X post?
A free account can post 280 characters. X Premium raises it to 25,000. Both are presets here. Note that links and attached media are treated differently by X than by a plain character count.
What is the Pinterest pin description limit?
A pin description accepts 500 characters, and a pin title 100. In the feed only around the first 75 characters of a description and 40 of a title are shown, so the tool marks that point as well as the hard limit.
Why does Instagram allow 2,200 characters but only show 125?
Because the hard limit and the display limit are different things. Instagram will accept a 2,200 character caption but collapses it behind "more" after roughly 125. Your caption is not rejected, it is just unread past that point, which is why both markers are shown.
Do emoji count as one character?
Here they do, and that matches what most platforms report. A naive length check in JavaScript counts many emoji as two, and a flag or a family emoji as four or more, because it counts code units rather than characters. This tool counts what a person would call one character.
Why is my SMS limit 70 instead of 160?
A plain SMS using the standard GSM-7 alphabet holds 160 characters. A single emoji, curly quote or accented letter forces the whole message into Unicode encoding, which drops the limit to 70. Both are offered as presets so you can check against the right one.
Are these limits current?
They were checked against published platform guidance in October 2026 and are reviewed periodically. Platforms do change them, and some vary by account type, region or server, so treat the numbers as a reliable reference rather than a guarantee. If you spot one that has moved, tell us and we will correct it.
Is the title tag limit really 60 characters?
That is a convention rather than a rule. Google measures the available space in pixels, not characters, and rewrites titles when it judges a better one exists. Sixty is a sensible target, which is why the tool marks that preset as a recommendation rather than a hard limit.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting runs entirely in your browser using local JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted to our server, never written to a database and never passed to any third party or AI service. Disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
Need more than a character count?
The free word counter and text analyzer adds reading time, repeated words and phrases, sentence length patterns and sixteen counting rules you can switch on and off.
