Space Counter

Count the spaces in your text, and find the whitespace you cannot see. Non-breaking spaces, zero width spaces and em spaces look identical to an ordinary space and behave nothing like one, which is why pasted text breaks in ways nobody can explain. Nothing is uploaded.

Most of the trouble with spaces comes from the ones you cannot see. Text pasted from a word processor, a design tool or a web page routinely carries non-breaking spaces, zero width spaces and em spaces that look exactly like an ordinary space and behave nothing like one. They are why a line refuses to wrap, a search finds nothing, and a URL breaks for no visible reason.

What the Space Counter does

Finds the spaces you cannot see

Non-breaking spaces, zero width spaces, em and en spaces, narrow spaces and byte order marks are all counted separately. They look exactly like an ordinary space and behave nothing like one, which is why text pasted from a word processor breaks in ways nobody can explain.

Double spaces and stray edges

Runs of two or more spaces are counted, and so are the lines that begin or end with whitespace. These are the three things a proofreader looks for and the three hardest to see.

Tabs and line breaks kept apart

A tab is not a space and a line break is not either, so they are reported separately. A Windows line ending counts once rather than twice, which is the usual way a whitespace count goes wrong on pasted text.

Nothing is uploaded

Counting runs in your browser using local JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, never stored and never passed to any third party. Disconnect from the internet and it still works.

Space Counter questions

How do I count the spaces in my text?

Paste the text above. Ordinary spaces, tabs and line breaks are counted separately as you type, along with any invisible whitespace the text is carrying.

What is a non-breaking space and why does it matter?

It is a space that refuses to break across a line. Word processors insert them automatically, and they survive copy and paste. On screen it is identical to an ordinary space, but it behaves differently in search, in code and in anything that splits text on spaces, so a line that will not wrap or a search that finds nothing is very often one of these.

What is a zero width space?

A character that occupies no width at all and is completely invisible. It arrives with text copied from design tools and some websites, and it will break a URL, an email address or a code sample without anything looking wrong. The tool counts them so you know they are there.

How do I find double spaces?

They are counted for you. Any run of two or more ordinary spaces is reported as one double space, so three spaces counts once rather than twice. The habit comes from typewriters and most style guides have asked for a single space after a full stop for decades.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is counted in your browser by local JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, never written to a database and never passed to any third party or AI service. Disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
