Twenty one letters are always consonants. The twenty second, Y, depends on the word it appears in, which is why it is a switch here rather than an assumption. Vowels are shown alongside, because a consonant count on its own tells you very little.
Consonant Counter
Count the consonants in any text. Twenty one of the twenty six letters are consonants, and the twenty second, Y, depends on the word it is in, so it is a switch rather than an assumption. Nothing is uploaded.

What the Consonant Counter does
Y is a switch, not an assumption
Twenty one letters are always consonants. The twenty second, Y, depends on the word, so it is a switch, and the count of Y is shown either way so you can see exactly what moved.
Vowels reported alongside
Consonants only mean something next to the vowels, so both are shown together with the ratio between them and each figure as a share of all letters.
Letters only, cleanly separated
Digits, punctuation and spaces are excluded from the letter count rather than quietly swept into the consonant total, which is a common way these counters go wrong.

Consonant Counter questions
How do I count the consonants in my text?
Paste it above. Consonants are counted as you type, with the vowels and the total letter count beside them so the figure has something to be measured against.
How many consonants are in the English alphabet?
Twenty one, if Y is counted as a consonant: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y and Z. Treat Y as a vowel and there are twenty. The switch above decides which way this tool counts, and the number of Y is shown either way.
Are there English words with no vowels?
If Y does not count as one, yes: rhythm, lynx, crypt, myth and gypsy all manage without A, E, I, O or U. Words with no vowel letter at all are rarer and tend to be interjections such as hmm and shh.
Do digits and punctuation count as consonants?
No. Only letters are counted, and the letter total excludes digits, punctuation and spaces entirely. Sweeping them into the consonant figure is a common way these counters go wrong, and it makes the ratio meaningless.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser by local JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our server, never written to a database and never passed to any third party or AI service. Disconnect from the internet and the tool still works.
